School Camp

News just in from the Primary 7’s at Benmore

“We have all arrived safely at Benmore.  The children are really happy in their dorms and are quickly settling into their routines.  Many of them showed great perseverance in making their beds and helping their dorm mates too.  They are helping to keep the place spick and span, but the highlight of their day is the cooked breakfast and cake at 5pm!  All the children are a credit to the parents and our school; showing lovely manners, helping one another and taking part enthusiastically in all tasks.  It’s only Tuesday and we are all excited about the activities to come- photos to follow!”

Underwater Expedition

Inspired by Jacques Cousteau, ‘Finding Nemo’ and David Attenborough’s Blue Planet pupils from Ferryhill Primary School have embarked on their own subsea adventure.

Their primary 5 pupils set their imagination loose on encounters with dolphins, wild swimming and wreck diving and created a set of striking semi-abstract collages.

The exhibition will run until the 1st of February 2020 and can be viewed during regular library opening hours.

Winter Windows Competition

The Department of Art and Design is delighted to announce that Ferryhill Primary School has a winner.

The jury of the Winter Windows Competition, a partnership between Edinburgh’s Christmas and the City of Edinburgh Council, selected Mahiya’s design of a ‘Fox in a Festive City’ from 255 submissions from school all over Edinburgh.

Mahiya was invited to the winners’ reception at the City Chambers and received a certificate from the Honourable Lord Provost himself. The judges were so impressed that, in addition, she received a special commendation from the Arts & Creative Learning team, who singled out her design out for the strong layout and use of colour.

Lorna MacDonald, the Principal Officer for Arts and Creative Learning at City of Edinburgh said

“The little urban fox and his wee footprints in the snow clinched it for me – really gorgeous and it looks stunning enlarged and lit up.”

Mahiya’s design is on display in West Parliament Square, just outside the registrar’s office at the City Chambers. If you happen to be in the Old Town over Christmas, please go and see it.

Ferryhill Pupils secure Festival Exhibition

Pupils from Ferryhill Primary School have been selected to show watercolours and animal sculptures at

Stockbridge Library, Hamilton Place

during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

A selection of young artists aged between six and nine years are delighted to share their paintings and models of dragonflies with you. They were inspired by books from the Natural History section of Stockbridge Library in their quest to investigate the location of rainforests, to find out about the animals and the people who live there, and to learn about damage to the environment caused by deforestation.

Five watercolours on the curved main wall of the library depict each young artist’s favourite animal.

The dragonflies dancing in the air above the bookshelves were made from sticks recovered from fallen branches in George V Park and on the Water of Leith Walk. Pipe cleaners served as legs and iridescent foil was used for the wings. The nylon line from which the dragonflies are suspended was previously used for fishing in the Western Isles and has been rescued from being sent to landfill.

It would be great if you dropped by Stockbridge Library to see the exhibition and leave a comment in the visitors’ book. The exhibition runs until the 29th of August 2019.
