Underwater Expedition

Inspired by Jacques Cousteau, ‘Finding Nemo’ and David Attenborough’s Blue Planet pupils from Ferryhill Primary School have embarked on their own subsea adventure.

Their primary 5 pupils set their imagination loose on encounters with dolphins, wild swimming and wreck diving and created a set of striking semi-abstract collages.

The exhibition will run until the 1st of February 2020 and can be viewed during regular library opening hours.

Winter Windows Competition

The Department of Art and Design is delighted to announce that Ferryhill Primary School has a winner.

The jury of the Winter Windows Competition, a partnership between Edinburgh’s Christmas and the City of Edinburgh Council, selected Mahiya’s design of a ‘Fox in a Festive City’ from 255 submissions from school all over Edinburgh.

Mahiya was invited to the winners’ reception at the City Chambers and received a certificate from the Honourable Lord Provost himself. The judges were so impressed that, in addition, she received a special commendation from the Arts & Creative Learning team, who singled out her design out for the strong layout and use of colour.

Lorna MacDonald, the Principal Officer for Arts and Creative Learning at City of Edinburgh said

 “The little urban fox and his wee footprints in the snow clinched it for me – really gorgeous and it looks stunning enlarged and lit up.”

Mahiya’s design is on display in West Parliament Square, just outside the registrar’s office at the City Chambers. If you happen to be in the Old Town over Christmas, please go and see it.

Time for Reflection

Our school is a community of learners from different cultural and social backgrounds with a wide range of beliefs. Our curriculum of personal development is based on respect for self and for everyone else. Time for Reflection is a statutory provision within Curriculum for Excellence that:

  • provides opportunities for the school community to express and celebrate values;
  • gives the school community time to reflect upon a variety of traditions and viewpoints as well as other stimuli such as literature, art and music
  • provides opportunities for the community to reflect upon values, beliefs, commitments and hopes
  • which are implicit in being human

We sometimes work in partnership with visitors to help our children learn about the real-life experiences of people whose lives may be very different to their own. This can provide an experience for children to find out about a wide range of views religious and otherwise.

We provide Time for Reflection through our Friday morning assemblies six times a year. Parents can withdraw their children from participation in Time for Reflection. If you wish to do so, please contact the school.
